Solved: How to speed up a slow Windows 7 laptop
By Renee | 21/Nov/2024
You can drink four cups of coffee and a shower in the time it takes your computer to start. When it finally does boot, trying to get anything done feels like you're watching a sloth moving. Laptops can become slow for a variety of reasons, but it can be divided into two categories: hardware and software. The hardware might be overheating, some drivers may be off or outdated, or your computer might just be clogged up by running too many programs.
This particular article deals with the software problems as these are most easily addressed. Here's how to speed up Windows and make your laptop or PC faster.
1. Speed up Startup by Disabling Startup items in Task Manager
Your laptop might be loading up way too many programs and services that you don’t need right after turning it on.
To go through the startup list, you could press Ctrl+Shift+ESC on the keyboard to open Task Manager. Go to Startup and look at the items listed here:
Then simply click and disable the one has less startup impact or the one you do not need in a hurry.
At Neptune SystemCare Ultimate, we’ve solved this problem easier with the utility called Startup Manager. You can find out exactly what these unknown startup programs and services are doing. With easy clicks, you can identify, modify, delete programs, or restore the one that is falsely disabled, to speed up your laptop.
2. Defragmentation
The more programs and files you use, copy and move, the more cluttered the bits and bytes on your disk become — and the more the read/write head has to work in order to open or store your data. So you have to wait for minutes to open a media file.
Defrag your disk by opening up your Start menu, typing in Defrag and hitting the Enter key. Click on Optimize to start the process — and be patient, this might take some time.
Or you can have a smarter and quicker defragmentation with Neptune SystemCare Ultimate.
3. Registry Clean
Like some Microsoft employees have elaborated: In rare instances, some missing keys might cause error messages upon startup. But if you do have an error, make sure you go with a professional registry cleaning tool. You can count on Neptune SystemCare to fix the system issues of your laptop.
4. Hard Drive Clean
Every day you use your laptop, its programs, its browser or its games, you leave behind tons of digital waste, which might be temp setup and program files, setup logs, Windows Defender leftovers, temporary internet files & offline web pages, System error memory dump files and others. Luckily, there are quite a few options to get rid of this clutter:
-You can use the built-in Windows Disk Cleanup tool which deletes the basic clutter on your computer. Search Disk Cleanup on the start menu search box. And then you have to go to every hard disk to clean the unwanted files.
-At Neptune SystemCare Ultimate, you can erase all the dump files by one easy click. One-click PC Checkup will scan and clean the problems slowing down your laptop.
5. Uninstall applications you don’t need
You might have apps on your laptop you barely use or need anymore, slowing down your machine and wasting disk space. To get rid of them, go to your Windows Control Panel and click on Programs and Programs and Features. Go through the list and make sure things you don’t need get uninstalled.
Now that you’ve learned the simple technique to speed up your laptop. You should do this on a regular weekly or monthly basis. Next, before you install any piece of software, think long and hard if you actually need it or plan to use it regularly. If you just need it once, remember to uninstall it.
