Registry is the blood of Windows, which stores the information of the system, software, hardware, pretty much everything in Windows. In other words, registry is a tree database, hives (mentioned before) are the branches, and the keys with value are leaves. All the information inside the registry is usually managed by the Windows operating system, which can also be modified by software or manual.

By editing the registry, we can revise the authority, optimize system and so on. For example, we can prohibit others to use the "Start" menu by change some key in the registry.

1. Use regedit

An example speaks clearer. If we want to stop the search function of Start menu, and we know that we need to locate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer, and set a new Dword value, 1, in the right panel. Here’s what you should do.

->Find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer layer by layer and alphabetically.

->Right-Click on the right panel, choose New and create a new Dword value, named NoFind.

->Right-click on NoFind and type 1 in the Value data box, enter OK.


2. Use a free Registry Editor
